The Hellenic Society of Polar Zones (E.LE.PO.Z) proudly announces the launch of the first Greek mission to Antarctica, a landmark initiative for the Greek scientific community. This pioneering mission includes Christina Balomenaki and Efharis Gourounti, graduates of the School of Architectural Engineering of the Technical University of Crete and active members of the TUC TIE Lab’s scientific team, who will be hosted at the Bulgarian base on Livingston Island, Antarctica. The mission will begin on 12/21/2024 and will be fulfillled on 01/24/2025.

Working in the field of neuro-architecture and participatory design, their goal is to record and analyze the parameters that influence human activity and psychology in extreme environments. Specifically, the two researchers, using a specialized audiovisual system, aim to gain a deeper understanding of the psychological challenges faced by people in such conditions and develop strategies to support them during missions in isolated and extreme climates.

In addition, they will conduct research on the participatory design of a base, gathering data from the Bulgarian base in Antarctica. This study aims to provide improvements in the design and operation of bases in extreme environments, ensuring the well-being and efficiency of researchers working in such facilities.

This mission is supported by the sponsoring company, Laskaridis Shipping Company Ltd, whose significant contribution enhances scientific progress and global collaboration in the field of polar research.

The Hellenic Society of Polar Zones views this mission as an important strategic move that positions Greece on the international scientific stage and strengthens the country’s role in polar research and environmental protection. This mission serves as a springboard for future collaborations and studies, making a significant contribution to global understanding of environmental issues and their impact on the planet.

With the dedication and professionalism of our scientists and the unwavering support of their collaborators, the Hellenic Society of Polar Zones and the Greek Mission to Antarctica are opening new horizons for the scientific community and for Greece on the global scientific map.
